Haji Ali an important place for worship is thronged by people of all
faith, the Muslims and also the Hindus. It is nested on an island
off the shoreline of Worli. Haji Ali is connected by a causeway
and accessible only when there is low tide in the sea. It was built
in 1431 by a rich merchant called Haji Ali who gave up a life of
luxury before undertaking a pilgrimage to Mecca.
The story goes that during his journey to Mecca he died and his
coffin carrying his body sailed back to Mumbai. Some believe that
the great saint drowned at the place where the mosque stood.
Thursdays and Fridays mark the important days when people flock to
the shrine to receive the blessings of Haji Ali.
Within the Haji Ali shrine is a tomb decked in brocaded red and
green sheet. Inscribed on the mirror embedded on the marble pillars
are the ninety-nine names of Allah.
Walking through the causeway reaching the Haji Ali shrine is
entirely all together a heavenly experience.
